One minute owners all of a sudden find there lovely loyal puppy with its brilliant recall is out of sight on its first prey chase, after a bike, jogger, sheep etc. and you’re left standing there shouting and screaming but no matter what you do you cannot get your dog back. This can cause serious problems not only within your own relationship with your dog but also legally, i.e. chasing sheep, seriously and/or fatally injuring others, for example with car chasing.

Prey chase as it is called is a behaviour hard wired into the brain of some dogs and is displayed for a number of reasons, for example; territorial, fear, socialising and hunting issues.

​

Chasing behaviour is an inherited predatory hunting sequence, so owners need not worry that it is something they have caused during their training. You will find even calling your dog back off one off the chases while hanging a fresh roast chicken in your hands will not get your dog back and this is because prey chasing is internally rewarding for the dog.

 

Normal training methods of treats and a pat on the head will not bring a prey drive dog back. When a dog is in prey chase it gets a release of dopamine every time it performs this inherited pattern, similar to that in drug use or pleasure eating in humans, so as you can imagine this is very addictive for your dog.

In helping a dog with prey chase problems we have to realise how much pleasure they are getting from the chase. We also need to consider that the external rewards usually used in other areas of training are not as valuable to the dog’s prey chase instincts. As prey chase demand is more powerful and self-rewarding, we need to alter the dog’s cognitive processes in order control the prey chase.
